Asian artwork is proving extremely popular at auction houses this year, according to recent analysis.
Contemporary and antique paintings by Asian artists are notching up extremely high sales at auction houses this year.
This is according to the New York Times, which said bothSotheby's and Christie's were seeing antiques and arts from the region prove very popular of late.
A total of $41 million (£27 million) was recorded yesterday(April 5th) at Sotheby's for sales of pieces by Asian artists, with many going for well above their expected prices. One such work was from contemporary Chinese master Liu Ye, whose painting entitled Bright Road was bought for $2.45 million - nearly three times its estimate.
The news follows a recent event in New York - Asia Week -featuring valuable antique ceramics such as a Qing Dynasty vase priced at $6 million. Sales took place at the Hong Kong Auctions base on MadisonAvenue and also included 63 Chinese paintings going under the hammer.
