Antique paintings could have a high value this year.
When looking to ascertain the value of an antique painting, the story of one portrait's sale may inspire.
A piece by French painter Edouard Manet was bought at a London auction for more than £22 million through Sotheby's.
It was painted between 1878 and 1879 and was picked up by an anonymous bidder.
News of the sale might encourage individuals to search their cellars for hidden masterpieces and consult an expert for accurate art appraisals.
The piece is an example of the impressionist movement and its sale comes as a range of major artworks go under the hammer in London this week.
Writing in the Guardian, Mark Brown notes that the picture depicts Manet as "a dandyish gentleman".
He described the purchase as being part of a "brisk evening" for Sotheby's.
Meanwhile, the auction house will be putting a rare William Turner work up for grabs on July 7th.
In fact, the artist's Modern Rome - Campo Vaccino has been estimated at between £12 million and £18 million.
