Auction house Bonhams will be putting the document under the hammer.
A document pertaining to the foundation of the constitution in South Africa is to go under the hammer at auctioneer's Bonhams this month and is expected to fetch between £20,000 and £30,000. In his autobiography, Nelson Mandela said of the paper: "The Freedom Charter captured the hopes and dreams of the people and acted as a blueprint for the liberation struggle and the future of the nation".
This copy of the 1955 manuscript is to be included in Bonhams' South African Art Sale on the 24th, without an export licence in order to ensure that it stays within the country. Alongside it, other works by artists from the region such as Irma Stern, Jacob Pierneef and Gerard Sekoto will feature.
This comes after a contemporary art auction at Sotheby's brought in £54.1 million, including pieces by Yves Klein, such as the 1961 F88 which went for £3,289,250 in keeping with the pre-sale estimate of between £2.8 and £3.5 million.
