A blue diamond from the De Beers Millennium Collection has gone under the hammer.
A rare blue diamond belonging to the De Beers Millennium Collection has been valued and sold for $6.4 million (£4.2 million)at auction. The stone - bought by gem trader Alisa Moussaieff in Hong Kong -surpassed its top appraisal but did not beat the record set in 2009, Reuters reports.
"It's an individual thing and people have got to like it and people have got to see the value in it," she remarked.
The 5.16-ct rock is one of the most uncommon to be found, with the De Beers Millennium Collection comprising 12 rare gems that took years to amass.
Overall, the auction generated $52.4 million, which Sotheby'snoted is the biggest amount ever for this kind of sale.
Similar lots are to go under the hammer on April 20th, New Tang Dynasty Television recently reported, with a pink-orange diamond ring - the largest to be valued by the Gemological Institute of America - being put up for bidding.
