This was well above the guide price of between £12 and £18 million.
Modern Rome - Campo Vaccino by master craftsman J M W Turner has been bought at a Sotheby's auction on behalf of the J Paul Getty Museum in Los Angeles for the record price of £29,721,250.
This surpasses the painting's original art valuation of between £12 and £18 million and also exceeded the previous record for one of his works - Venice, Giudecca, La Donna della Salute and San Giorgio - which took £20.5 million in 2006.
Speaking of this achievement, David Moore-Gwyn, deputy chairman UK and senior specialist in British paintings with the auctioneer's, described it as a "tremendous and much-deserved result".
"This breathtaking image shows the artist at his absolute best and, for collectors, it ticked all the boxes," he continued.
It comes after an Andy Warhol painting of Dame Elizabeth Taylor went under the Christie's hammer and fetched over £6.7 million, in keeping with estimates prior to the sale of between £6 and £8 million.
