An antiques valuation of up to half a million pounds has been placed on a William Turner watercolour.

A William Turner painting could be set to fetch £0.5 million if an antiques valuation comes true.

The water colour - which depicts Conwy Castle and the sea - will go under the hammer at a Christie's auction on December 7th in the sale of Old Masters.

The item is currently in the hands of a private collector after being painted by Mr Turner, who died in 1851, when he visited Wales.

Peter Lord, one of Wales' foremost expert on the visual arts and a researcher at Swansea University, told Wales Online the artist's trips to the country were very important in terms of the art history developments since in Britain.

He added: "He became famous much later for painting in Switzerland in that very high romantic style of his, but the foundations of it were laid on his five tours of Wales before 1800."

What's more, Mr Lord stated Wales was where Mr Turner learned to paint.
